EVENT DETAILS
The White Cane Awareness Walk is an event organized to promote a better understanding of Maine’s White Cane Law and to increase public awareness of independent and safe travel for people who use white canes or guide dogs.
The Iris Network’s mission is to help people who are visually impaired or blind attain independence and community integration. At The Iris Network, we teach the skills a person needs to live with vision loss and maintain an independent and active life at home, at work or in their community. One of those skills is orientation and mobility: techniques and strategies to get out and about for travelers who are blind or have low vision with help from white canes and guide dogs. That is what the White Cane Awareness Walk is about – demonstrating that safe independent travel skills are used every day by blind and low vision individuals as they travel in their communities for work, school or leisure activities. The day will include a mile walk around Portland that starts and ends at Monument Square. By participating in the Walk, you are raising needed dollars for The Iris Network’s programs and every bit counts! All donations are tax deductible. Registration 8:30 AM Start of Walk 9:30 AM |
